(please read general guidelines on trekking along with this)
Bandipur National Park (BNP), part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, was the hunting ground of the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore. This NP was brought under Project Tiger in 1973 and is well protected. It is situated across the Ooty-Mysore highway, and happens to be one of the most visited NPs in India. Encompassing an area of 874 sq. km, Bandipur NP contains a variety of vegetation types ranging from deciduous to scrub forest and grassland. Accordingly, the animal life is also rich and varied.
Bandipur is a trekkers paradise. The diverse topography, ranging from the depths of Moyar gorge to Gopalswamy hill-top is good enough to attract a variety of trekking enthusiasts. Accompanying experienced Naturalist further enhances the value. However, the trekker is cautioned that Bandipur NP is elephant-infested, and therefore a certain level of risk element exists.
The Forest Department have established 10 trekking trails in Bandipur NP, to satisfy variety of preferences and interests. Some of the trails are day-treks, while others involve camping in the jungle.
